Mercedes 300 SLR on Goodwood Festival of Speed

There are precious few cars whose anniversaries call for celebration on Goodwood Festival of Speed four decades down the road – but this year is the Porsche 917's 40th birthday. On Saturday and Sunday, the Goodwood Festival of Speed marks the occasion with the largest gathering of 917s ever seen in Britain, including short- and long-tailed cars and CanAm derivatives.
And yet, while most enthusiasts will know about the 917 and its fearsome reputation, it's harder to explain to the layman why its cult status has endured. The car had a competitive life of just two years and there have been faster and more successful cars before and since – many of them from the same company – so why has the 917's fame survived for so long?

Electric Porsche 928 Sheds 400 Pounds and Three Gears to Make One Man Happy

Jeff McCabe owns a Porsche 928. However, he wanted an electric Porsche 928 in the vein of the Tesla Roadster that he can't afford. So here's what Jeff did: he removed "over 1,700 lbs" of dead weight by eliminating a bunch of useless stuff like the standard engine, transmission (actually just 1st, 4th, and 5th gears), and a bunch of electronics, pop-up headlights, and so on.

He also replaced the wheels and brakes with lighter units and made sure to ace that heavy glass. Once that 1,700 pounds was in the trash, he added 1,300 pounds in the form of 750 lithium iron-phosphate cells (he originally used lead acid batteries).

The result is a car that can go for 115+ miles before it needs a recharge (versus the ~45 from the lead acid units) and can hit 85 miles per hour (137km/h). Too bad it can't do 88. For some info straight from the owner of the car, check out the vid below. Anyone interested in providing him with a CVT?

New 911 Speedster: Porsche's Blast from the Past, Now on Film

Earlier today, we told you about the all-new 408-horsepower Porsche 911 Speedster that will have its world premiere in Paris on September 30 and hit the streets this December. Now we bring you the first video of the limited edition drop-top 911 with the chopped down windshield and double-bubble hard top, both directly inspired by the original 356 Speedster. Scroll down to watch the official promo.

On a side note, if anyone knows where the video was filmed, leave us a message in the comments section below.

Insider: New Porsche 911 Speedster to Debut in Paris

The recently introduced 408HP 911 GTS (read more here) in Coupe and Cabriolet forms won't be the only newcomers at Porsche's Paris Motor Show stand. According to our insiders, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker will also stage the world premiere of the long-rumored 911 Speedster based on the current 997 series.

The last time Porsche offered a Speedster variant of the 911 was back in the early Nineties with the 964-based model (see photos below). Like its predecessor, the new Speedster will pay homage to the 356 Speedster of the 1950s, featuring a chopped windscreen and the classic twin hump behind the front passengers.

Other highlights will include the nostalgic Fuchs-style alloy wheels from the 911 Sport Classic and the wider rear end from Carrera 4 models.

The new two seater 911 Speedster will be built in a limited number of units. We'll update this story as soon as Porsche comes out with an official release, so stay tuned...
