Audi A5 Sportback Caught Unmsaked at Photo Shoot in California!

While 'das' Germans at Audi are playing hide and seek with the new A5 Sportback releasing only one cryptic teaser shot of the five-door coupe, a member of the Audi enthusiast forum at Fourtitude captured the sleek-looking sports sedan during a photo shoot on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The pictures aren't of the best quality but they clearly outline the shape of the A5 Sportback that is set to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall.

Even though the front-end of the car is masked in the photos, it is evident that the styling will be similar if not identical, to the A5 Coupe. From the B-pillar and back, the Sportback gets its own unique styling highlighted by the swoopy roofline.

Audi A5 Sportback: First Official Photos and Details, Including Price - Sales Start this Fall

The brand with the four rings has released the first official teaser shots along with initial information that includes details on the entry prices and the engine range of its much anticipated A5 Sportback. The third variant of the A5 series after the Coupe and Convertible models is a sleek five-door coupe with a low-slung roofline and a large hatchback that draws its inspiration from the Sportback concept study revealed in Detroit earlier this year. The new A5 Sportback will be available with an extended range of turbocharged and naturally aspirated gasoline engines as well as diesel units.

While Audi is holding back on the full blown photos of the car, the German firm tried to give us a picture of the A5 Sportback by comparing the five-door coupe's exterior dimensions to the A4 Sedan. According to the automaker, the A5 fastback (doesn't that sound more correct?) is 36 mm or 1.42 inches lower than the A4 Sedan while it also features shorter overhangs at the front and rear as well as a 2mm longer wheelbase of 2,810 mm (9.22 feet).

Notable styling traits include the frameless doors and of course the fact that unlike other sport sedans of the same philosophy like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the VW Passat CC, the A5 Sportback features a somewhat more practical lift-gate instead of the traditional trunk. Audi claims that the Sportback's baggage volume of 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) nearly equals that of the A4 Avant while there's also the option of folding the rear seats down, in which case, the volume increases to 980 liters or 34.6 cubic feet.

There are no teaser photos of the interior but don't expect something radically different from the A4 and A5 models. The premium five-door coupe is a pure four-seater with Audi claiming that it will offer comparable headroom and legroom space with the A4 Sedan.

The initial engine range of the A5 Sportback will consist of two gasoline and three diesel engines. The two gasoline units, the 2.0-liter TFSI with an output of 211HP and 350 Nm or 258 lb-ft of torque and the 3.2-liter V6 generating 265HP will be combined with Audi's all-wheel drive quattro system.

The diesel lineup will include a 2.0 TDI with 170HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft), a 6-speed manual gearbox and start/stop system, the 2.7-liter TDI with 190HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and the three-liter V6 TDI with 240HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of maximum torque and quattro all-wheel drive.

The A5 Sportback is set to arrive at Audi's European dealerships in September with an entry price of €36,050 in Germany (or about $50,000 US at today's exchange rates) for the 2.0 TDI version. Audi said that in the middle of 2010 it will add a cheaper model in the mix. The automaker did not disclose any other details but we're guessing that the entry-level model will be powered by either the 160HP 1.8-liter TSI or the 180HP 2.0 TFSI gasoline engines.

Audi A5 Sportback Uncovered through Leaked Photo

A new photograph of the Audi A5 Sportback has hit the web fully revealing the five-door coupe's profile. The styling comes to no surprise as Sportback follows in the lines of the A5 Coupe with the wavy belt line and the low roofline, but it does feature a distinct C-pillar design with a more dramatic kink at the back. Despite its sportier looks, Audi promises 'comparable headroom and legroom' with the A4 sedan.

The exclusively four-seater fastback will be launched in Europe this fall with buyers being able to choose between a 211HP 2.0-liter TSI and 265HP 3.0 FSI V6 petrol engine and two diesels, a 170HP 2.0TDI and 1 190HP 2.7 TDI.

Something tells us that it won't be long before we see more pictures of the third variant of the A5 family after the Coupe and Convertible models, so stay tuned on Carscoop as we'll be updating this story as soon as we find out more. VIDEO: Audi's Chief Designer Draws the new A5 Sportback

In addition to the cryptic shots and preliminary specifications of the A5 Sportback, Audi also published a video with the firm's Chief designer, Wolfgang Egger, drawing a sketch and explaining a few details on the car's styling. In Audi's own words, the A5 Sportback is "as elegant as a coupe and as practical as an Avant" but that's something we'll need to see for ourselves. Audi A5 Sportback: Tailgate Upskirt - Don't get too Excited

Audi took advantage of its TechDay Quality event where the company informed us on the methods it uses to achieve quality standards in series production vehicles, to reveal at least one photo of the 2010 A5 Sportback, that of the five-door coupe's tailgate. Using the process of elimination, we also found a few more photos shot during the event that may be of the A5 Sportback but we aren't entirely sure - they could be depicting the A5 Coupe. Audi Confirms A5 Sportback and new A8 for 2009, Q5 Hybrid also in the Works

During his speech at Audi AG's annual shareholders meeting in Germany, Audi Chairman of the Board, Rupert Stadler, revealed that the automaker is planning to present the next-generation A8 in November and extend its range with the new A5 Sportback sometime in 2009. Furthermore, Stadler confirmed earlier reports that Ingolstadt based company is also working on a hybrid version of the Mercedes GLK rivaling Q5 SUV and that the A1 minicar is due for a 2010 market launch with the Q3 small SUV following in 2011.

This means that unless Audi has another surprise up its sleeves, the four-door coupe derivative of the A5 is most probably the new model that the maker said its preparing to unveil during the celebrative festivities for the firm's 100th anniversary in Germany on July 16.

The A5 Sportback is in essence the production version of the sleek-looking Sportback Concept that was first shown in Detroit in the beginning of the year. Expect to see a familiar Audi engine lineup, including the latest 2.0-liter TSI with 211HP, the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with 290HP and a 3.0-liter V6 diesel cranking out 240HP.

"The A4 has attracted the largest share of customers loyal to the Audi brand. And a great number of them want to move further upward while carving out their own unique identity," said Stadler.

"The A5 Sportback is precisely what they're looking for. This vehicle will pose a genuine innovation in the B segment: a revolutionary vehicle concept offering the ideal blend of functionality and aesthetics"

As for the brand new A8 sedan (see the spy shots here), Stadler said claimed that it will be the sportiest model in its segment and that it will redefine people's notions of a luxury car's interior.

"We will also be presenting the next-generation Audi A8 and rest assured, Ladies and Gentlemen, it's going to be a sensation. The A8 remains Audi's flagship: it embodies our understanding of the word "premium"," Stadler told Audi's shareholders.

"The A8 will be the sportiest luxury sedan in its class – and set new standards with regard to interiors. Its precision and build quality are second to none. This model naturally means a great deal to us, because it played a greater role than any other car in the rise of the Audi brand. And we will unveil it to the world in a remarkable fashion in late November."

Here's the first video of the all-new Audi A5 Sportback that joins the ever-expanding cast of the so-called four-door coupes or if you prefer, sport sedans with coupe-like styling details such as slick rooflines and frameless doors. Scheduled to arrive in European showrooms in September, the latest addition in Audi's A4 - A5 family will offer buyers an initial choice of six engines - three diesel and three gasoline, ranging from 170HP to 265HP. At least for now, Audi says that the A5 Sportback won't be coming to the U.S. market. Watch the video after the jump.

Audi A5 Sportback Photo Scans from French Mag

Hopefully our second batch of photos on the Audi A5 Sportback won't turn out to be another photoshop job as was the case with the picture of the five-door coupe we showed you earlier today. According to our reader Florent who sent us these images, the article on the A5 Sportback was scanned from the latest issue of French Car magazine L'Auto Journal (allegedly No781). There's a good chance that the pics are official since Audi said it will reveal a new model during this Thursday's 100th anniversary celebrations but we'll let you be the judge of that by checking out both scans in our high-res gallery after the jump.

Audi A5 Sportback Officially Revealed: Mega Gallery with 60 High-Res Photos

The wait is finally over for the all-new A5 Sportback as Audi unleashed a full photo gallery of its high-anticipated five-door coupe which will be formally introduced this fall at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The German firm claims that new member of the A5 family "combines the best of various vehicle genres such as the emotion and elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon." Of course most will see a five-door, liftback version of the A5 Coupe with a sleek roofline, but still, we must admit that our first reaction on the Sportback's styling is positive.

Aside from the low-slung roofline and the rear hatch, the Sportback also boasts a unique C-Pillar design with a dramatic kink as well as frameless doors.

Without doubt, the A5 Sportback looks even better with the optional S-Line sport package that combines a tauter suspension setup and lowered body with larger alloy wheels, specific bumpers, distinctive features on the side air intakes, on the diffuser and on the tailpipes along with color keyed side sill trims.

Moving on to the interior, Audi's styling experiments pretty much come to an end with the new door trims and the four-seat layout as the dashboard is no different than the one found in the rest of the A4 and A5 family.

Even though the Sportback is 36mm (1.42 in) lower than the A4 Sedan, the German automaker supports that the four-seater model offers comparable headroom and legroom space with the more conventionally styled A4.

Furthermore, Audi says that the Sportback's compartment volume of 480 liters (16.95 cu ft) is nearly as much as the A4 Avant, and it can increase to 980 liters (34.61 cu ft) with the rear seats folded down.

There are no surprises under the hood as the Sportback will roll into European showrooms in September with a similar engine lineup to the A4 and A5 models. The initial range will consist of three gasoline units, a 2.0 TSI with 180HP and 211HP and a 265HP 3.0 FSI V6, and three diesels, a 2.0 TDI with 170HP, a 2.7-liter TDI delivering 190HP and a 3.0- V6 TDI that makes 240HP.

All models are equipped with a recuperation system that recovers energy during braking and deceleration and stores it temporarily in the battery while the three gasoline and the top diesel variants are offered with Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.

Audi said that the A5 Sportback's range will be enhanced with three more engines by mid-2010, one of which will surely be the new 3.0-liter supercharged V6 TFSI that develops 290HP in the A6 and 333HP in the S4 Sedan and Avant models.

In Germany, prices for the A5 Sportback range from €33,650 for the 180HP 2.0 TSI to €47,950 for the 3.0 TDI.

For the time being, Audi claims that the A5 Sportback won't be heading to the United States, but something tells us that the automaker may change its plans in the very near future.
